RFID as it Relates to the Cold Chain

In the cold chain shipping industry, temperature monitoring is a critical factor. Specific guidelines have been outlined by the pharmaceutical industry and regulatory authorities for the receipt, handling, transportation, and storage of finished cold chain pharmaceutical products. These guidelines must be adhered to ensure the safety of the product.

One step that the cold chain industry is currently taking to bring shipping protocol into compliance with industry regulations is its use of temperature monitoring devices, i.e., data loggers. Data loggers have the ability to monitor and record temperatures of sensitive shipments. Some data logger models have the capability to download the information recorded during transport to a computer for review and validation purposes.

However, some feel that even with the use of a data logger, you still have a margin for error and feel that a more sophisticated method of temperature monitoring may be needed such as RFID. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) employs the use of electromagnetic or electrostatic coupling in the radio frequency portion of the electromagnetic spectrum to transmit signals. This would eliminate the physical handling of the data logger and simplify the downloading procedures. With ever increasing technology the goal to achieving compliance in the cold chain is becoming less and less of a challenge to the pharmaceutical industry.

Kodiak Advantages:

Value Point #6: Increased Available Payload Area

The Kodiak R36 and R11 cold chain shipping containers feature a full 36 and 11 liters of available payload area. This means that you have a significantly increased payload area for shipments with a Kodiak container than you have with your typical foam and corrugated containers. Foam and corrugated containers appear large on the outside and seem accommodating enough for your shipments, but once you open the container and look inside, you will see that you have a much smaller amount of actual payload area that can be utilized. The available payload area of these type of containers diminishes even more once you pack the container with the necessary gel packs and dry ice they require to maintain their temperature. The Kodiak R36 and R11 containers have no requirements for the use of gel packs or dry ice, and can maintain an internal temperature of +2°C to 8C° for 5 days at an average ambient temperature of 25°C. Therefore, the full cargo space can be utilized saving you time and money on your temperature-critical shipments.
