Kodiak Co-Sponsors LifeConEx First Annual Biotechnology Seminar

LifeConEx held their First Annual Biotechnology Transportation Seminar, early June 2007 in association with Envirotainer and Kodiak Thermal Technologies, Inc. Held in San Francisco, California, this seminar was set out to achieve a mutual understanding of the intricacies of temperature-controlled transportation for this specialized sector, which is experiencing tremendous year-over-year growth. With over half of the products produced by this sector being a temperature-controlled product, there surely is a need to develop customized solutions that suit the needs of their highly sensitive and high value product.

Strategically, the conference consisted of ten top global biotechnology companies in the California area, where representatives from each company accepted to meet and openly discuss challenges in their role. Prior to the seminar, a survey was conducted with each attendee to understand what areas of product logistics makes their role most difficult. The results were right on, there is a specific need in this sector to address packaging solutions, product validation, reduce product cycle times and comply with regulatory standards, all while maintaining the integrity and quality of high value shipments.

As indicated by the results of the initial survey, LifeConEx teamed with Envirotainer and Kodiak Thermal Technologies to provide a comprehensive seminar that allowed open discussions and interactive workshops. The workshop sessions included topics focused on tangible, every day occurrences in the transportation of biologicals; as well as proposed concepts and ideas that can possibly be developed in the future.

Overall, having process management experts, members of DHL’s Global Forwarding and Express divisions, Lufthansa Cargo, and packaging solutions in attendance presented a holistic view to the experiences from all sides. A range of transportation scenarios and examples provided attendees with data and concepts to consider when transporting their products, as well as the contacts necessary to provide solutions across companies and transportation solution partners.

The seminar was a great success! The educational approach allowed for shared learning for all who attended. Kodiak and LifeConEx gained greater knowledge in better understanding the ever-growing biotechnology sector. As originally planned, the seminar proved to be more than a success for LifeConEx, it proved to help each organization evaluate their current cold chain, and improved their overall awareness of effective end-to-end integrated transport. Most importantly, LifeConEx built relationships that foster continued open communication, and provide strategic partnerships to increase overall productivity and ultimate profitability. Congratulations LifeConEx!

Review - PDA Cold Chain Conference '07

Kodiak participated in the 2nd Annual PDA Cold Chain Conference in Bethesda, Maryland on June 13th and 14th.  This conference was attended by more than 225 senior leaders in the industry from major pharmaceutical, biotech, CRO's, regulatory agencies and other life science companies.  The attendance was more than twice that of last year's conference and shows that the PDA is setting new standards for the education and standardization of the life sciences community.

Dr. Rafik Bishara, chair of the new PDA Pharmaceutical Cold Chain Discussion Group (PCCDG) was again the chair of this year's conference and opened the conference with the key note address discussion the updates to the PCCDG's Technical Report No. 39 which is quickly becoming the standards tool of the industry.  Hugo Wegewijs, representing the EU's C3 group then presented updates from the Temperature-Controlled Pharmaceutical Group.

The two-day conference included presentations coordinated around:

  • Global Regulatory Requirements

  • US Based Mail Order Management

  • Validation and Risk Management

  • Application of Cold Chain Standards for Risk Management

  • Interaction of Packaging Components for Risk Management

  • Handling and Transportation of Cold Chain Bulk and Intermediate Pharmaceuticals

  • Support of Service Providers to Technical Report 39

The next PDA Cold Chain Conference will be held in Berlin, Germany in October of 2007.  Go to www.pda.org for more information.

Kodiak Advantages: VIP's and Patented Thermal Shield

Value Point #2: 5-Day Internal Temperature Hold Time

One of the advantages of the Kodiak Container is the fact that it has the ability to maintain a 5-day internal temperature hold time. This is made possible by using vacuum panel technology and a patented thermal shield as part of the Kodiak Container. This combined state of the art technology of patented thermal shields and VIP's (vacuum insulation panels) is what enables the Kodiak Container to offer 10 times the insulation capability of ordinary foam insulation.

The Kodiak Container offers favorable conditions for extended life shipments of payloads for 5 days or more, depending on the payload mass and ambient temperature variables. The Kodiak Container also allows for accurate cargo temperature in all environments. This will enable customers to reduce spoilage and better plan for delays. With The   Kodiak Container, you also have expanded shipping days which makes it possible to ship on a Thursday or Friday and still maintain your product integrity.
