Biotech Outsourcing - CEOs expect increase in outsourcing

A recent article appearing in Outsourcing-Pharma.com reported findings regarding new research where Biotech Executives are expecting major increases in outsourcing for Clinical Research.

With a survey by Ernst & Young of over 400 biotech executives in the U.S., Canada and Europe, 77% or the companies expected to rely on CRO outsourcing of clinical research over the next 24 months vs. 70% currently. The market for clinical research is driven by the continued increase in R&D by both pharmaceutical and biotech companies representing +$60bn each year with 24% of those funds currently outsourced to CRO’s.

Biologicals currently represent 50% of all drugs in development and that has driven growth for the CRO’s. The E&Y survey also revealed that biotech companies will increasingly turn to outsourcing for their sales force to meet their short term needs. With sales representatives roles similar throughout the industry, the outsourcing function brings benefits of efficiency gains, expertise, speed, flexibility and avoiding capital outlay, while allowing firms to retain in-house control over their proprietary functions such as physician targeting and marketing. Biotech companies are expected to increase this function from a current 16% of the firms using sales force outsourcing to 36% within two years.

Finally, the contract manufacturing sector is predicted to see increased levels of outsourcing from a current 65% of the firms surveyed to 77% within the next two years.

Pharmaceutical and biotech firms are expected to rely more and more on contractors to provide more production and a wider range of services. With the increased number of biologics representing 13% of total prescriptions and the more than 400 biologic products in clinical trials and 700 biologic products in pre-clinical or early stage development, there is a growing thirst for contract production to support the growing bio-manufacturing processes.

It only makes sense that transportation of these products is also on the radar screen of senior executives and that this increase in the development of biologicals will significantly increase the use of cold chain transportation methods.

Kodiak Advantages: VIP's and Patented Thermal Shield

Value Point #2: 5-Day Internal Temperature Hold Time

One of the advantages of the Kodiak Container is the fact that it has the ability to maintain a 5-day internal temperature hold time. This is made possible by using vacuum panel technology and a patented thermal shield as part of the Kodiak Container. This combined state of the art technology of patented thermal shields and VIP's (vacuum insulation panels) is what enables the Kodiak Container to offer 10 times the insulation capability of ordinary foam insulation.

The Kodiak Container offers favorable conditions for extended life shipments of payloads for 5 days or more, depending on the payload mass and ambient temperature variables. The Kodiak Container also allows for accurate cargo temperature in all environments. This will enable customers to reduce spoilage and better plan for delays. With The   Kodiak Container, you also have expanded shipping days which makes it possible to ship on a Thursday or Friday and still maintain your product integrity.
